Nurse Carey and I recently attended the QC Youth Conference and had the privilege of engaging with Junior High students. My goal was simple. I wanted them to remember that a baby is a person in the womb, a person with a beating heart. As students filed past I would ask, “Why do you think Pregnancy Resources is here talking with Junior High students?” As you can imagine I received many different responses, most ending with “Dude.” I asked, “Can we agree that I am an old man?” Most snickered and agreed. I asked another question, “What happens when this old man’s heart stops?” Their response, “You are dead, Dude.” I then asked, “But why am I dead?” They knew right away and responded with “Because your heart stopped!” Simple, straight-forward logic – if we equate a heart that is not beating with death, then life must be evidenced with a beating heart! I asked if they knew what an ultrasound is, and if they could identify by looking at the fetal models when they thought the nurse can see the baby’s heart flutter on the ultrasound. The answers were all over the board. When Nurse Carey told them that she can see the baby’s heart flutter at 5 weeks 2 days+ on the ultrasound, shock and maybe some awe was evident on many faces. My hope and prayer for these young people is that they remember one thing – a beating heart is life!
