She found me at a local event. In her late 40’s, she was attractive and articulate. With tear-filled eyes, she spoke quickly and in a hushed voice.
“I know I can trust you, you’re the second person I’ve shared this secret with.” She paused, took a deep breath, and whispered “I had an abortion when I was in college. I think about my loss every day. I’ve only told my husband. My doctor doesn’t know, my pastor doesn’t know. It is a sorrow I carry alone.”
Sadly, she is not alone. Roughly 1 in 4 women over the age of 45 in the United States have an abortion decision as part of her personal story – and the majority express shame and guilt about that choice.
It may have been last year – it may have been 30 years ago…time is irrelevant when it comes to the pain of post-abortion trauma. IF this is part of your story, your sister’s story, your best friend’s story, and if you or they are struggling now – you are not alone.
There is hope. There is healing. April is Abortion Recovery Awareness Month and Pregnancy Resources is here for you. After Abortion Care provides a safe space for women and men to process the pain, the loss, and the trauma that some experience with an abortion decision. Help is a phone call away. Call 309-797-3636, press 2 for the Moline center, and ask for Pam OR email info@qcpregnancy.org to be contacted electronically. Don’t wait. Today can be the start of your season of restoration.
